En galgbacke på Limhamn

Along Ribban in Malmö, on a yard between two rows of houses, there is a gallows hill. It looks more like a small overgrown hump, with an old tree stump on top. On the tree stump someone has left a hat.

I found the gallows hill (its actual name is “Blosshögen”) on Google while on an exchange term to the art academy in Bergen. When I visited home in Malmö I went on a walk to find it, which was not easy in its suburban surroundings. It was hidden away behind big bushes and a long fence which I had to follow before finally finding the path towards the top of the hill. At the same time as I move around Blosshögen I photograph it, the photos are the basis for my drawings. By installing them in the exhibition space I reconstruct my walk on the site.

The situationists used to go on what they called “dérives”, walks through cities following instructions with the intent of breaking their everyday patterns of movement to create a new meeting with a place. Since moving to Gothenburg to attend art school I have constructed such meetings remotely through digital photo archives, Wikipedia-articles, and books about the places in Skåne that I come from. To return is to meet the places anew.

On the park bench, where me and my friends would drink beers during our final year in high school, a woman is sitting down breastfeeding her baby. KB is closed to make room for a new food-court. In the suburbs where pirate’s heads were once placed on spikes, people are discussing interest rates and mortgages.
