A Window To The Soul
A window is a barrier between you and the world, a transparent portal where two realities meet. From the outside, the window becomes a snapshot of the room inside, like a glimpse of another existence. Similarly, if you look out at the world through the window from the inside, you get a glimpse of the world.
In my exam project I have explored the finnväv technique and worked to combine my illustrative world with traditional Bohuslänsk finnväv. The project resulted in three weaves: Innergården (The Courtyard), Köket (The Kitchen), and På Väg (On the Move), which depict three different perspectives of the same universe, three different stages of being.
In these works, drawings and craftsmanship meet. All three pieces are woven in black wool and unbleached linen, a typical Bohuslän color combination, but the black and white also give the weavings a very graphic expression. The motifs are almost more akin to comics, graphics, and print media rather than textile craft. The finnväv motifs create balance between the traditional and the illustrative. By allowing tradition and my drawings to coexist in the weavings, I want to highlight this technique in a contemporary context.
