Equus

Equus is a sustainable material made from horse manure, among other things.

Every day, around 5,325 tons of horse manure are thrown away in Sweden. Horse manure is used, among other things, as fertilizer for our fields, but when the frost comes and the ground is hard and frozen, you can not spread fertilizer on the fields. This means that the manure is not used for a large part of the year. Many riding clubs are lucky enough to have agreements with various farmers who take care of the manure, but others are not so lucky and pay the municipality to have the horse manure transported away from the riding club.

Horse manure is a raw material that contains faeces, urine, bedding, feed residues and water. The big question in my project is how the process works to produce a sustainable material with horse manure as a base. The components used in my material creation are horse manure, bone glue, wool and hay.

The result of this project is based on the question of whether horse manure has the potential to become a material that can be used as a screen wall and a soundproofing material. A screen wall that will fit into environments such as offices and libraries and where the product will create a sense of security and calm in stressful environments. By using environmentally friendly materials and natural colors, I hope that the concentration will not be disturbed and instead create a better focus.
