The Sucker

Inkjet prints

“The sucker effect” is a psychological phenomenon that describes how individuals within a group tend to avoid taking on responsibility, driven by an aversion to being more responsible than others in a shared context. This phenomenon is especially relevant in today’s climate crisis, as many feel powerless or refrain from action, reasoning that individual efforts hold little significance. Through staged photographs, where models in uncomfortable poses convey detachment and indifference, Jonsson highlights how the resistance to being seen as a “sucker” contributes to a collective passivity in response to the climate crisis. Viola Jonsson’s artistic practice revolves around the psychological dimensions of the climate crisis and humanity’s place within a shifting landscape. Through photography, she explores themes of responsibility, overconsumption, and ecological loss. At the core of her work is a desire to reveal the internal conflict between intention and action, guilt and passivity.
