Sara Tonioni’s practice explores personal experiences and inherited traumas, reflecting on deep-rooted patterns of behaviour.
Sparked by her grandmother’s death, the project deals with the absence of physical affection. Lack of touch – through gestures, habits and silences shapes an individual from childhood, forming learned ways of relating toothers before it is consciously understood.
The title suggests a shift in perspective, and is intentionally expressed through the work’s materials. B&W analogue photographs, in combination with collage and stitching, bring together fragments of the body, domestic environments, and everyday objects, creating a space in which absence emerges through intimate traces. Here, the photographic process becomes a means not to an end, but towards an acceptance through longing and reckoning.
