RED TIDES

You wake up, exercise, eat, work, eat, work, exercise, eat, sleep.
Every day the same. Every month the same. Every year the same.
What does it take for you to endure?

In extreme, isolated environments we need change and variety, something to break the monotony in order to maintain mental well-being.
But on Mars, we face a unique set of challenges.

RED TIDES explores how interior architecture and spatial design can mitigate the psychological strain caused by monotony, isolation and detachment from the surrounding environment.

Grounded in principles of neurodesign, the subterranean research station is based on three core concepts: spatial variation, structure in interaction with light, and colour.

The floor plan offers multiple paths to the same destination, with subtle changes in level to introduce everyday variation. Ceilings with patterned skylights and textured walls disrupt the monotony of routine by creating a multisensory light experience – one that changes from day to day on a planet where the landscape looks the same all year round.

The colour palette offers mental stimulation, promotes recovery and supports circadian rhythm – from energizing yellow in the kitchen to calming blue in the station’s only room above ground.

Maybe then we can live – rather than merely survive – on Mars.
