Sympathetic Vibrations
Sympathetic Vibrations is an effort to bring improvised music to spaces and situations where otherwise live music would not exist.
A “band of furniture” replaces traditional sitting objects with musical possibilities in the public space.
Throughout the more than 100,000 years of music history, most people were actively involved in the act of making music. The last century transformed most of us from music-makers into music-consumers.
By including musical features into otherwise “normal” furniture, I aim to provide more occasions for people to engage with music in the explorative and playful manner that characterized most of music-making in vernacular settings throughout history.
Introducing musical furniture in the public space can serve as a kind of trojan horse that allows people to explore sound, play and connect through the act of making live music together.
