Kontrast – en plats för paus från den sociala belastningen

Kontrast is a project that aims to create spaces for pause within the urban environment, offering visitors a chance to stop and reflect amid the flow of everyday life. In this case, it concerns Gothenburg, where the pace and public life is often fast and the impressions many. The project focuses on the contrast between the city’s constant movement and the need for calmness, highlighting the value of taking a short break.

Through a spatial design process that combines analog and digital 3D techniques, three installations have taken shape. They are inspired by the body’s movements in different types of hugs – the bear hug, the friend hug and the side hug. These hugs are formed after shapes that follow the movements of arms and legs, capturing the individual emotional meanings of each hug. The hugs symbolize embrace, safety and recovery – things often missing from public spaces.

The installations are located in three places in Gothenburg: Esperantoplatsen, Grönsakstorget and Lilla torget. These are areas where people move about daily and where the need to pause may be significant. The hugs function as small free zones where the body and mind can rest for a moment.

They are made of fiberglass polyester plastic, a durable material that also has the ability to capture bodily expression through form. The hugs carry a physical presence that is allowed to be soft, uneven and asymmetrical – in contrast to how public environments are often designed based on a single body ideal. In this project the body takes up space and becomes the one that shapes, rather than being shaped.
