Tactile Storytelling

This project explores new ways of storytelling through tactile, handheld objects – in collaboration with children with visual impairments. What happens when a story is not only seen or heard, but also felt?
Inspired by translation studies – where translation includes movement between different forms of expression – the project investigates how stories can take on physical shape.
What began as an attempt to make a picture book accessible through tactile illustrations evolved into a design process that questions what it means to read, to understand, and to experience a narrative. By creating three-dimensional forms “read” by hand, alongside oral storytelling, the story becomes a shared, embodied experience.
The aim is to challenge the visual norm in storytelling – and to show that all children have the right to engage with stories on their own terms.
