A Soft Sequence: Spatial Transformation in a Historic Building – The Café at Röhsska Museum, Gothenburg
This project explores how a café in a historic building can be transformed without major reconstruction or permanent interventions. The project is based in the café of the Röhsska Museum in Gothenburg and investigates how colour, textiles and spatial sequences can reshape the experience of a space through relatively small additions.
The museum’s existing architecture is characterized by dark, monumental and visually heavy rooms. The project begins with the contrast between these exhibition spaces and the need for a warmer, more inviting and human-centered environment for pause and social interaction. Through warm colours, suspended textile installations and softer spatial divisions, the café is transformed into a space with a stronger and more distinct identity. The textile additions also help guide movement, filter light and soften the acoustic environment.
Rather than replacing the existing architecture, materials and furnishings, the project builds upon them. The new additions are intentionally contemporary while remaining connected to the historical character of the site. The project demonstrates how colour, textiles and reuse can function as spatial tools for creating atmosphere, identity and a transformed spatial experience in an environmentally and economically sustainable way.
