‘How are we not the same (yet)?’

Site-responsive installation with photography, sculpture, and alternative painting
Pigment prints, varnish, foil, mdf, acryllic paint, clay, fabric, and tape

Mette Hartung Kirkegaard has a site-responsive approach to photography. She takes visual inspiration from the exhibition space by allowing its forms and colors to shape her work. In the process of making ”How are we not the same (yet)?”, she visited the room The Cathedral at Röda Sten Konsthall several times and spent time looking, being, and photographing. She was drawn to the traces of past use, all the little details that tell the visual story of the building that today is an art museum.

Using her intuition and emotional response, Kirkegaard created an installation that embraces and activates the space. By highlighting what is usually overlooked, she invites the viewer into an empathic state of mind, where the distinction between artwork and site is blurred, reminding us that we are always part of a context.
