Bark in Design

An exploration in creating a new way of working with bark, with this project I have found a way to enhance bark in order to make it usable in design. Exploring the beauty of bark and what lies underneath its surface has created an opportunity to celebrate it by creating a variety of objects that enhance the patterns and colours. The addition of stabilized bark in these objects is a showcase of how this material can be used in design, a library of shapes, colours and textures to best understand the material.                 Bark is a tangible material with rich texture therefore I only thought it would be fitting to create prototypes of handles and knobs, the parts of furniture we touch the most.

Materials and techniques used : Pine, Birch and Oak bark stabilized with Cactus juice stabilizing resin in wood turned handles
