MIST

Gothenburg is a city deeply marked by rain. That was one of my first impressions after moving here. The rain became a defining feature of the city and of my new life here; a cold and wet weight of daily routine. A sharp contrast to my earlier, more positive memories of rain: droplets tapping softly against the window, visible but distant, accompanied by a warm blanket and a cup of tea. Two entirely different atmospheres and experiences, yet both centered around rain.

MIST is a concept for a restaurant interior situated on the rooftop terrace between Våghuset and Brick Studios, near Järntorget in Gothenburg. The interior expresses the dual nature of rain’s atmosphere. A cool and refreshing feeling in its midst, a warm and cozy in its presence. It’s an experience that engages the senses through tactile materials, shifts in temperature and a menu designed to reflect and enhance each side. A way to celebrate the beauty and versatility of rain through interior design.

To connect with the rain even indoors, parts of the space are left roofless, allowing the rain to fall inside. A recurring design element is the interplay of undulating forms and straight lines, inspired by the shapes of water droplets and the idiom of rain. The color palette strengthens the contrast between the two atmospheres, builds bridges between them and ties into Gothenburg as a city. The materials take cues from rain and water, using transparent and reflective surfaces reshaped to highlight each respective mood. The interior is equipped with varied seating groups with different functions, catering to both dining and drinks.
