The Carbon Cycle

This project is a reflection on the eternal movement of carbon – and our place within it.
It is about transformation, combustion, and time. Of what has been, what is, and what is to come.
And of how we, through small sparks of storytelling and gathering around a fire, can attempt to understand our part in the Earth’s greater cycles.

The result is a ”fire-play” a turbine designed to spin with the help of an open fl ame. The fi gures within the frie-play portray the carbon atom’s journey from a human perspective. The project serves as a conversation piece, aiming to inspire dialogue about ecological sustainability, the Earth’s cycles, and humanity’s relationship to time.

The project has taken shape through associative drawing and an exploratory design process, where diff erent materials are brought into dialogue with one another.

I believe we need more stories that give voice to nature – stories that do not point fi ngers, but remind us that we are nature too, that we are interconnected, living in symbiosis with all that surrounds us – and that we must become better at recognizing the consequences of our actions.

Where does the carbon end, and where do we begin? Is there something that holds the world together – fine threads like an invisible spiderweb stretching between all points, every square millimeter of the universe’s physicality?
