Bitvis – ett ursprung, tre uttryck

In the project Bitvis – Ett ursprung, tre uttryck, I have worked with wood offcuts from Göteborgs Möbelsnickeri, material that would otherwise have been discarded, and used it as a starting point to design three stools: Söm, Fog, and Omslag. Through a material-driven and exploratory approach, the project investigates how remnants and leftover parts can gain new life and unique expressions through craftsmanship.

Instead of beginning with a fixed idea, the process has been guided by the shape, quantity, and limitations of the collected scrap material. Irregularities, marks, unusual dimensions, and traces of previous use have not been hidden. On the contrary, they have been allowed to remain visible and influence the design. The work has been small-scale and slow, shaped by a close relationship with the material. Each stool has taken form through direct interaction between hand, eye, and piece of wood.

The three stools represent different ways of approaching leftover materials. One explores rhythm and repetition in construction, another highlights the tactile and visual potential of end grain, and the third uses veneer to challenge our perception of the wood’s surface and identity. In each object, the variations in the offcuts have become an asset rather than a limitation.

Bitvis also aims to be part of a larger conversation about how we create, what we value, and why certain materials are given space while others are sorted out. By working with what already exists, rather than what is in demand, the project encourages us to think of design as more than just form and function — as a way of relating to resources, narratives, and responsibility.
