 Inuti

What is the scent of anger?

What is the color of sadness?

What would it feel like to hold an emotion in your hand?

Does it transform into another one once you have held it long enough?

The graduation project Inuti (Inside) explores primary and secondary emotions using the multisensory medium soap.

Have you ever felt angry, only to realize you were actually sad once you sat with the feeling for a moment? If so, you have experienced what are known as primary and secondary emotions. A primary emotion is an immediate reaction to a situation. It provides you and those around you with useful information about your current needs. A secondary emotion is not about the situation itself, but stems from your thoughts and values regarding that initial feeling. It arises when the primary emotion is avoided and can often be misleading. But how do you explain this to an 11-year-old through design?

Using soap as a medium, children are invited to explore this concept through a multisensory experience. The bathroom serves as the setting, utilizing the shower/bath routine to encourage the exploration of emotional self-care in a private and safe space.

The design of the outer layer of the soap reflects the secondary emotion in its color, shape, and scent. The inner layer features a different color, representing the primary emotion. The packaging mirrors how one emotion can envelop another; it consists of a fold-out box containing information, a protective wrapping paper, and stickers. Together, these components create a situation that engages multiple senses while inviting both reflection and dialogue.
