Otherworldly is a personal essay film that explores grief, absence and metaphysical communication. In the film, the filmmaker draws on her own experience with loss, as well as on those of others, to convey the strange and synchronistic experience of receiving signs from the afterlife.
The film combines nature imagery, personal stories and physical performance to create a calm, poetic space; a space which invites the viewer to feel and contemplate loss, longing and how we might still be connected to those who have passed away. Visually, the film’s aesthetic mimics analog film and thus has a nostalgic or timeless feel. In this way, the film gives the viewer a sense of being grounded in the present, while also providing a sense of being out of place and time. This feeling is emphasized by a minimalist soundscape.
Research:
Throughout the MFA course, Laura Anderson has explored ideas related to the relationship between the material (body/senses) and immaterial (psychological/spiritual) in various ways before looking into signs and metaphysical communication specifically.
Her research has included embodied filmmaking and movement on screen, along with Jungian theory on synchronicity; anthropological ideas on afterlife as well as near-death and end-of-life-experiences.
