EYOND HOUSING: Enhancing Student Living Experience and Coliving Collaboration in Shared Spaces

Within the context of international student housing in Sweden, a systemic gap often persists between students’ lived experiences and the institutional logic of housing providers. This project, Beyond Housing, utilizes Embedded Design to bridge this divide, specifically focusing on the unique environment of Corridor Housing. Its scope of intervention expands beyond the physical boundaries of shared kitchens to encompass broader community-driven social construction in public spaces.

The methodology is rooted in gamified co-design workshops built upon a foundation of rigorous thematic analysis. Through this process, raw student insights were transformed into a catalyst for collaborative decision-making. Rather than merely designing a digital interface, the project integrates the features and functions decided by the students themselves into a platform prototype. This shift reclaims the Authorship of the residents, empowering them to transition from passive tenants to active co-creators who define their own living environments and social ecosystems.

The outcome provides a mechanism for diverse student groups to self-organize and voice their experiences, while offering management institutions critical primary data on resident satisfaction and space utilization. Beyond Housing demonstrates how establishing effective participation mechanisms can foster a user-driven, mutually beneficial co-living ecosystem, ensuring that student residences become active, inclusive communities.
