Room to Dream

Room to Dream is an exploratory child culture design research project that wonders what it might look like if cultural spaces prioritised relationship-building over education in their engagement with young people (9-10 years old). In sharing a gallery space and ceding power to young people, we can move beyond a top-down, one-directional approach to engaging young people in cultural spaces.

Room to Dream employed improvisation and material exploration with young people in Angered and Tuve to co-create exhibitions in Blå Stället Konsthall and Galleri Monitor. We ended up with two exhibitions: one involving a mini tabletop parade about children’s dreams, and the other was a six-metre giant blob that was both an object and a space, to be shaped and played with.

What else could emerge when we design opportunities for young people to shape and influence cultural spaces?
