Visual Fragments of Vasagatan
The project Visual Fragments of Vasagatan explores the Urban Visual Culture of the street Vasagatan through the image making tool of Portable Scanning and Artistic Publishing. It investigates what happens if we redirect our attention towards Urban Visual Details and directly engage with urban surfaces through the sense of touch while scanning.
The project thus not only creates a visual experience but also a tactile experience, resulting in a multisensory experience overall. Through this direct engagement with the urban space and noticing Urban Visual Details such as brick carvings or small surface tags that went unnoticed before, the perception changes and enables the discovery of hidden signs and symbols of the street.
To reflect this perception shift, I created an Artistic Publication wherein I present this new visual language created through arranging the scans of Vasagatan. Different chapters are meant to represent this new Urban Visual Experience, and different scans were used to showcase this, such as including wiggle scans which not only blur the original image but are also symbolising often the fast-paced and distorted urban space at the same time.
Additionally, workshops were held that invited participants to explore Portable Scanning in Vasagatan and Artistic Publishing through creating a zine with their own scans. The intention was to not only to allow the participants to gain a new perspective on Vasagatan through working with scans visually, but letting them create their own new visual language with their scans. The workshops allowed the participants to shift their perspective from seeing to perceiving the urban visual space.
