The Storytellers

The Storytellers is a participatory design project that has explored how collaborative multimodal storytelling can foster children’s resilience. By encouraging children to take on the role of storytellers and work collaboratively together, they might grow in their imagination, language, social skills, and confidence.

This project has been done in collaboration with librarians and children in Biskopsgården, a multicultural area of the city. With a new library being developed at Friskvädertorget, a participatory process focused on language development and multimodal directives was established.

Through four co-design workshops, we have explored how to create stories through multimodal approaches such as orally, visually, tactilely, and theatrically. With these approaches, children at any language level can still be storytellers by building their stories physically. Like that, children can take on different roles to support each other, as builders and interpreters.

The outcome is the storytelling toolkit: The Storybuilder/Sago Skapa Saker. This kit supports children in their storytelling through a landscape to tell stories and interactive materials. The kit contains a story structure, character builder, a timewheel, and story-blocks. With these tools, anyone can be a storyteller.
