Memento Mori

Popular wisdom reminds us that “all things must end.” Yet growth, especially economic growth, remains the guiding principle.

This obsession with expansion leads to disastrous management of both natural and human resources, eroding the common good and our relationship to the living world. Our refusal to acknowledge natural limits reflects both a cultural unease with death and individual fantasies of immortality.
This project explores how death is approached in contemporary France and the consequences of a deteriorated relationship with it, focusing in particular on the production of funerary objects, now largely controlled by neoliberal economic actors driven by profit maximization.

Following a historical and anthropological study of funerary art and a critical reflection on the current market, I investigate potential forces of change, including alternative political and economic models.
This research enables me to propose tangible alternatives to the current funerary products, through new interpretations of traditional funerary typologies.
Combining critical analysis with speculative design, I aim to reframe our experience of death by reimagining essential funerary objects within a broader and holistic dynamic : design for life.
