Creatures’ Comfort

This project questions why sitting has become so stiff. Common chairs often dictate posture, decrease movement, and distance the body from the ground. This work explores floor-based furniture as a more dynamic and embodied alternative.
Through a hands-on design process, two prototypes were developed using traditional upholstery techniques and natural materials such as Swedish wool and buckwheat hulls. This material focus challenges the synthetic foam while exploring the untapped potential of locally sourced materials.
Drawing on ideas of anthropomorphism, the furniture adopts expressive, creature-like qualities that invite interaction and curiosity. Inspired by immersive environments such as Visiona II by Verner Panton, the work combines a playful, psychedelic aesthetic with the grounded functionality of floor seating found in meditation practices.
User testing indicates that sitting closer to the floor increases body awareness, encourages movement, and makes a more intimate social interaction. Rather than prescribing a correct way to sit, this project proposes furniture that allows the body to move, shift, and relate more freely to both space and others.
