Call of Duty

4-channel video installation.

Obedience and multitude strip the soldiers of their humanity and character as they are perpetually saluting their masters.

DISCIPLINE – COURAGE – HONOR – DUTY – LOYALTY

Ballistic body armor plates, text.

Five reminders of what makes a good soldier are printed onto body armor plates which are meant to protect the soft, warm innards that soldiers themselves don’t want to acknowledge.

Tova Nyberg (b.1993, Uppsala) employs mixed media to explore areas of strong personal ambivalence. One such area is military aesthetics, warfare and Sweden’s role in the global arms industry. While the areas of investigation as well as medium may vary, conflict remains the point of interest.

In Call of Duty Nyberg examines the soldier archetype through role-play and readymade objects. A study of masculine ideals, discipline and vulnerability.
