A Forest Sámi Home

What is a home when memory is fragmented? What is a Forest Sámi home?

This project begins in Máláge/Malå and in a Forest Sámi heritage shaped by colonisation, displacement, and silence. Through conversations, journeys, collective making, and material exploration, the home is investigated not as a place to own, but as something that emerges through relationships, between people, landscapes, and memories.

Drawing on the traditions of the gåhtie, the ájtte, and duodji, Forest Sámi building and craft knowledge is translated into contemporary furniture, textiles, and a house. Rather than searching for a lost original, the project seeks ways of listening to what still remains: in materials, stories, and acts of making.

Design becomes a means of creating and sustaining relationships, where making carries knowledge across generations, places, and people. The home emerges as a vessel for these relationships, a space where materials, stories, practices, and communities can meet and be kept alive.
