Flooded with Play

Due to climate change, heavy rainfall and droughts happen more often. Moholmsparken in Örebro is designed to endure this climate change and this project investigated how this climate adaptation can be used as an opportunity for children’s play. Nature play namely has a wide spectrum of health benefits and, water play specifically, holds wide potential for learning and a connection to nature. It can be seen as risky, but risk lowers the threshold for children’s physical activities and free play, and contributes to a balanced development of the child.

Through a series of co-design workshops I empowered local children in the age of 8-12 years old to have a say in their future park, combining my interest in climate change and sustainability with Nature Based Design where the existing natural landscape is used as part of a design with accessible natural materials.

This has led to a design proposal for the Municipality of Örebro consisting of three objects that draw attention to nature and offer various types of play which contributes to play time and richness:

A wooden bridge with different challenge levels and islands to chill on.

A sloped pier that enables access to the water at all water levels as well as a play hut.

A wooden monster, laying partly in water, as a landmark visualizing the impact of heavy precipitation while offering stepping stones to the other side of the water.
