Unfinished Forms
Unfinished Forms is a modular play system that lets children build their own spaces using lightweight wooden frames and connectors. Instead of giving children a finished playground with fixed rules, the project gives them simple building elements that can become anything such as forts, tunnels, towers, hiding spaces, climbing structures, or completely unexpected creations.
The idea came from observing how children naturally turn everyday objects like chairs, blankets, and boxes into their own temporary worlds. I wanted to create a system that supports this instinct while also introducing real architectural and construction thinking through play.
The project combines ideas from loose-parts play, construction play, and spatial design. Through workshops with children, I tested how they build, cooperate, solve problems, and invent new ways of using the system. The process involved constant experimentation with scale, shapes, materials, and connection systems.
The final result is an open-ended architectural kit made from wooden frames and magnetic connectors that children can assemble, disassemble, and reconfigure freely. The system encourages creativity, movement, collaboration, and spatial exploration, while allowing children to become active creators of their own environments rather than passive users of a playground..
