The Open Kitchen
Challenging modern kitchen design, based on stories and experiences coming from various cultural traditions.
Today’s modern kitchen is full of luxury goods and machinery which helps humans to prepare food as fast and efficiently as possible. The modern kitchen is all about convenience. While this also has its benefits, as smart kitchen elements tend to work efficiently and therefore support better energy management, it simultaneously has many disadvantages.
As a response to the modern convenience and consumer based kitchen, this degree project proposes a necessity based kitchen, that also takes inspiration from kitchen elements, some of which are long-established traditions, within other countries that work more energy and water efficiently. It goes back to the essence of the kitchen, questioning what it is that humans really need, how the kitchen space and its appliances can be minimized and in which ways it can adapt to social and environmental sustainable practices. The Open Kitchen presents a new vision for western kitchen design based on these considerations.
