Oil on canvas and turned pine
180 cm x 160 cm

I paint a shelf in thin layers of oil paint, and the fields of color between the shelves become shallow rooms or deep, lined rows. A place to collect, display, or stash things away. It’s an intuitive process where I scrape away and fill in until the traces on the canvas themselves begin to suggest figuration. Like looking at knots in a pine ceiling and slowly seeing them transform into eyes, faces, and figures.
I’m interested in color and what happens when one shade is placed next to another. Through color, I search for ways to express moods and explore states of being. It’s a process that raises questions and answers that can’t be thought out in advance. I start somewhere, only to eventually end up somewhere else.
As I work, I think about what’s worth keeping, about what might be good to have and for what purpose. I think about a glass-encased viper, stacked jars, and Lisa Larson. The objects, in turn, create relationships with each other, and once the painting is finished, I’m no longer allowed to take part.
