Spillmaterial
An exploration of natural colors, chance, and the aesthetics of co-creation around a dining table.
The project Spillmaterial has resulted in three dinners and ten co-created tablecloths, as well as posters, menus and a publication.
Spillmaterial explores how natural dyeing techniques derived from food can be used in a co-creating practice situated around a table. The meal serves both as a space for conversations and free creation, where the leftovers from the meal become a source of color. The project is based on slow design principles that value long-term thinking, transparency, and relationships, not only to the material but also between people. Born out of a need to find a place where creation is central and design becomes a verb, the project challenges the notion of the solitary designer.
A major focus of the project has been to find a framework that emerges only when spilling, smudging, or printing with natural dye on a tablecloth. This has been explored through screen printing using various mordanting methods. Furthermore, methods for inviting and organizing workshops have been investigated, as well as the aesthetics that arise within the co-creative process. Finally, methods to allow slow traditional dyeing techniques to continue outside the textile workshop have been explored.
