Is it possible to translate literature into textile sculpture?
I am (not) made of words consists of a collection of textile fragments inspired by a personal reading of the text “The Glass Essay” by Anne Carson. The fragments are made out of wet felted wool and linen weave, and are individually inspired by a theme or a specific quote from the text. They are sewn together to create a combined textile sculpture. The work explores how literature and reading can be given physical form and representation through textile materials.
What is forfeited in the process of translation — and what is gained?
Perhaps, translation is only a hopeless endeavour.
