Her name was

It all began with a moving box, filled with embroidery, crochet, and textiles passed down from my grandmother and great-grandmother. A quiet inheritance of women’s work, knowledge and care, once a natural part of life, now often invisible.

She Was Called is a textile monument that gives space to voices rarely heard and to the life work rarely seen in history. Through patchwork, embroidery, and a growing list of names, women’s stories take physical form.

The work is rooted in Marbo, in the historical district of Mark, a place where textiles have long been part of daily life. Through conversations with people in the area and inspiration drawn from the local history, both form and expression emerged. The Marbo stitch, a traditional regional embroidery technique, has inspired structure, pattern, and detail, reinterpreted in a contemporary context. The floating Tree of Life becomes a symbol of care, growing knowledge, and a heritage passed hand to hand.

This is a work about what we remember, what is allowed to take up space, and who is written into the story of our history. A reminder that what is shaped by hand does not only create things, it also shapes relationships and identity.

It is a form of listening, rather than a writing of history. A quiet voice of resistance in a society where value is often measured in visibility, efficiency and profitability.
