Chasing Shapes
Chasing shapes is a metal art project inspired by graffiti, specifically the throw up style of painting, the throw up is a less Is more type of design meant to be fast and clean.
I wanted to implement some of the often-used graffiti effects, such as stretch, drip and shadow to my metal objects. This is to make my 2-dimensional work appear more 3-dimensional, while I still use flat materials. I present two of the effects in the work I exhibit, drip and stretch.
The idea of my first piece is to make the stretch effect. As shown in the first picture, I want it to look like one piece from the initial perspective, at least as much as possible, then make it shift into a stretched piece as the perspective alters when you move closer.
The idea of my second piece is to imitate the drip effect commonly found in graffiti artwork. I have given both the drips and the stretch a highly polished appearance to depict metals in a liquid state. I have also added coloring through a technique found in an earlier and wider studies surrounding ways of coloring metal.
